Moyse Charas, or Moses Charas (2 April 1619 – 17 January 1698) was an apothecary during the reign of Louis XIV. He became famous for publishing compendiums of medication formulas, which played vital roles in the development of modern pharmacy and chemistry. He was pharmacist to Charles II of England. He was arrested and imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition while traveling in Spain until he renounced his Protestantism and converted to Catholicism. He is also known for assisting Nicolas de la Reynie during his investigation of the Affair of the Poisons.

Charas worked with vipers, which we use in our story. His first wife was Suzanne Felix, and she is also a character in our story. He was from Uzès, which is where Milady grew up in our story, but not in Dumas or the BBC series.
